Future Fleet Program
The NSW Government, through the Future Fleet Program, is committed to revitalising domestic rail manufacturing and is encouraging industry to be part of an exciting future for the NSW and Australian rail manufacturing industry.
The Future Fleet Program will establish a long-term rollingstock procurement pipeline to replace Sydney’s suburban passenger fleet with quality, locally manufactured trains that are safe, reliable and accessible, connect communities and support local industry.
This will begin with the replacement of the Tangara fleet, which the NSW Government has committed to start procuring by March 2027. The procurement will include a minimum 50 per cent local content target to ensure Australian, NSW and New Zealand businesses and jobs are engaged in designing, building and maintaining the new fleet.
Transport for NSW is inviting industry partners to get involved, share their insights and help shape the next generation of NSW’s passenger rail across both rolling stock and supporting infrastructure.

Program status
The NSW Government has announced a $12 billion investment to rebuild train manufacturing in NSW, including a new state-owned train manufacturing facility in the Hunter and a long-term rolling stock pipeline extending beyond 2050.
Since 2023, Transport has been engaging with industry to contribute to the development of the program, understand the local train manufacturing landscape, inform the procurement approach and facilitate connections across the broad train industry supply chain.
